Living Green in and around DC

There are a number of great options to go green in DC. Below is a crib notes length guide to how to get started. Want an in-depth overview? Attend one of our monthly workshops!

Transportation

You don't need to own a bike to ride a bike in DC--just join the SmartBike program.

Sell your car and join the car-sharing program Zipcar.

Electricity

Replace your coal-electricity with 100% wind power from Clean Currents

Or you can purchase renewable electricity credits (RECs) directly from Pepco or (even) Dominion!

Solar Power

Call Standard Solar and see if solar panels are right for your home.

Biofuels

Get your biodiesel and learn about local biofuel options with the Green Guild Biodiesel Coop in Riverdale, MD.

Legislative Advocacy

Get engaged in regional and national advocacy with the Chesapeake Climate Action Network

Push green legislation in Washington, DC with the DC 11th Hour Action Meetup Group

Recycling

DC Office of Recycling tells you how to recycle effectively both at your home and at work

There is a reason the phrase is "Reuse, Reduce, Recycle"... recycling should be your last resort. Give away or pick up used stuff through Freecycle or Craigslist.

Office Supplies

Before you buy, be sure to go through the WWF procurement guide to ensure your products have minimal environmental impact.

Or rest easy and purchase things from Green America's National Green Pages, a directory of pre-screened goods.

Home Products

If you are looking for a one-stop shop for your green goods, definitely check out Greater Goods on U St. They even offer free eco-classes on location!

Also consider making a trip to Eco Beco in Rockville. They also do home energy audits.

Faith

Greater Washington Interfaith Power & Light helps churches and other faith groups go green
